Elvis Kafoteka retires from active football
Moyale Barracks defender Elvis Kafoteka has announced his retirement from active football after over a decade of ups and downs in the career.
The former Flames captain was supposed to undergo full military training and become a soldier this year, but he has opted out of the barracks to become a businessperson.
He signed a year-long contract with Moyale Barracks last year after dumping Mozambican club Atletico de Mecanhela. He was assured of joining the Army.
Then, he said he was joining Moyale to regain fitness and form awaiting his next move abroad.
“Now, I think I have done my part as a player. As I grow up,
I want to pursue my business interests,” said the 36-year-old in a telephone interview on Wednesday.
“This means I will not be in Moyale Barracks’ plans for the next TNM Super League season,” he said.
But he said he will continue pursuing his case against FAM in which he is seeking compensantion after he sustained an open fracture on his arm when the Flames played against Cote d’Ivoire during the Cecafa Tournament in Tanzania in 2010.
“I will follow that case up to the last mile. Currently, I am waiting for my lawyer [Bob Chinmkango] to return from South Africa to brief me on the position of the case. But he assured me that everything has already been filed at the Blantyre Magistrate’s Court,” said Kafoteka.
Kafoteka started his football career at Civo United Youth team in 2001 before being promoted to the senior side in 2005.
He started earning Flames call-ups in 2005 and was a regular defender till his retirement in 2011. He also had a stint with Escom United (now Kabula FC) before he embarked on his professional career at Rwandan side APR FC in 2010.
He made 48 league appearances at Civo United between 2005 and 2007, in which he scored six goals. At Escom, he made 28 appearances without a goal while at APR, he featured in 14 league matches without a goal as well. With the Flames, he scored three goals in 23 games.
